The Shining City

The Shining City; a bastion of free trade, so long as that trade happens to involve larceny, extortion, murder and slavery…. and happens to go through ‘authorised’ traders, mercenary bands and despots.

The shining city lies in the bay of the Jaws of Dakri, built amongst the remnants of a once great city. Few of the original, ancient, buildings remain, but those that do belong to the wealthiest and cruellest of denizens. One of these, a towering spire-like structure that glimmers ethereally with the light of both sun and moon grants the city it’s namesake. A mysterious ruler, known only as the Beacon, dwells within The Shining Spire, dealing out rulings and trade deals through a series of emissaries known as the motes of light, powerful men and women who are said to be able to crush the will of any mortal. In the centre of the city, the partial ruin of an ancient keep holds court to The palace of Judgement, a mockery of law and punishment where those deemed to be in the wrong by the corrupt ruling class are held until public execution in the ancient throne room.

The rest of the city consists of brick, and even marble, dwellings for those with any semblance of money or favour. The majority of the populace, however, live in the poverty of a floating shanty town known as The Swells, practically a city of its own built upon the decks of vessels both large and small.
